Home care is so very important with patients that are in orthodontic treatment. We stress to our patients that brushing and flossing is the key to a beautiful smile. Once you have your braces you will be given a "Survival Kit" of items that should help with keeping you comfortable.

What to expect

Your mouth may become sore this evening & continue for a few days. Soft foods, soups and other liquids will make eating more comfortable. The Wax you get will help braces rubbing against your lips. Mouth rinse and ointments, that we provide, will help with any sores that may develop. Advil & Tylenol provide good pain relief and should only be taken with adult supervision. We will see patients approximately every 5 to 6 weeks.

Brushing

Before brushing with toothpaste, dry the brush first. Angle the toothbrush towards the brackets up and down. Then follow the chart with toothpaste on the toothbrush. Use the chart to floss as well. The best floss you can use is Superfloss made by Oral-B. If you do not brush correctly and the plaque and food stay on the teeth you can develop permanent white spots on teeth. THE SPOTS DO NOT COME OFF!! After brushing and flossing we would like our patients to rinse with ACT fluoride rinse. The best time to do this is at night just before bedtime, you do not want to eat or drink anything after for about 30 minutes.

Foods

The following food charts are very important. The foods listed below can cause brackets and bands to become loose. Loose brackets and bands can prolong your treatment and we do deduct points for your grade. This does not mean you must give up all your favorite foods. So eat carefully and know what's ok and what's not.
